Should a small business website have a blog? Short answer: Probably not. A blog is an always-hungry beast. It always needs fresh material to do its job. If you have your hands full running your business and you barely have time to get your kids fed, don’t start a blog.
I have visited several small business websites that have a blog: Invariably the blog has about three posts from two years ago and hasn’t been looked at since. This is worse than not having a blog. It makes a site look almost abandoned. A small business website is there to help customers know what you offer. Don’t mess it up by looking unprofessional with an abandoned blog.
On the other hand, if you are in a business that people have a lot of questions about and you like writing and you have the time, then maybe a blog would be a good way to drive business your way. An updated blog keeps a site fresh and a fresh site is always Google-friendly (that is, SEO). A good blog with interesting information your customers might search for gets them to click on your site. And the information they get there lets them know you are an expert. And that’s good for business.
So, before letting your website designer add a blog to your site, think about your goals, your time commitments, and your interests. Make a thoughtful decision before committing to this new “pet” that needs constant feeding
